Kierann awoke from a seemingly deep sleep to the sounds of a new morning, groaning and grasping at her neck she slowing began to sit up. She drew her hand from her neck placing it before her eyes, watching the crimson liquid slide down her skin, filling the crevices of her hand; memories of the night before came flooding back to her. She looked around at the children who were running around, laughing and playing –not a care in the world. She wondered why they weren’t shrieking with fear when they looked in her direction. She let out a loud scream, nearly deafening her ears from the sound. Sure now I can scream. She thought. Yet none of the children stopped to look around, in fact they hadn’t been disturbed at all. They continued on as if she hadn’t made a sound, like…she wasn’t even there.
She looked down at the ground where her body had laid moments ago. It was clean, the sand was undisturbed, no signs of a body imprinted in it, no trails or piles of blood. There was no evidence of anything that she remembered happening. She drew her hand back up to her neck. Her skin was untouched, there was no open wound, no blood tricking down any longer. Confusion crept its way into her head. “Impossible!” she said aloud.
“Hey you, hey kid!” She said as she walked over to a little girl on the swing. The girl didn’t budge, didn’t even give a glance in Kierann’s direction. Kierann spun around in circles, her eyes fixated on the world that went whizzing by her. Then it hit her like a ton of bricks, she was no longer one of them…she was no longer alive. She was caught in limbo. Between the world of the spirits and the world of the afterlife she was in The Changing.
Kierann stood there, nearly beside herself, her hands gently stroking her neck where the wound had been and whispered.
“Kiss me...”
